New motherhood can be overwhelming—especially when you’re also trying to prep for your first child at the same time. There are so many things to think about and so little time to do them! Most new moms will put together a baby registry, but there are some necessities that we tend not to think of until it’s too late… until now. There are many great items out there that make life as a new mom easier, simpler, and cuter. Here are 6 products new moms should have on their baby registry.

A nursing pillow

When breastfeeding, you’ll spend significant time nursing your baby. A nursing pillow is a perfect solution for supporting your baby while you nurse—no more awkward positions! Choose a nursing pillow that’s made from a breathable material like cotton. You can even buy ones with a removable cover that you can throw in the washing machine. If you’re having trouble finding a nursing pillow you like, don’t worry—there are many other solutions, too. You can use a regular pillow, too, or try one of these alternatives:

  • A baby blanket.
  • A rolled-up blanket with a firm pillow on the inside.
  • A t-shirt that you’re not wearing.

Baby-friendly snacks

While you’re breastfeeding, you’ll also have to pump, too. Many moms find that they’re hungrier while breastfeeding, and it might be hard to find both breastfeeding-friendly and kid-friendly snacks. So what’s a new parent to do? Try these snacks instead:

  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Yogurt parfaits with granola, dried fruit and honey
  • Fruit and cheese
  • String cheese and a cracker
  • Granola bars
  • Cereal and milk or a smoothie
  • Oatmeal with milk and dried cranberries

You can always offer your baby whatever you’re eating if you’re not breastfeeding. Watch what you’re eating while pregnant—you don’t want to give your baby indigestion.

A car seat cover (and a stroller cover, too!)

You’ll probably spend a fair amount of time transporting your baby in their infant car seat, so you’ll want to protect it (and your sanity) in the process. A car seat cover will not only keep it clean and safe, but it’ll also make it fancy. You can get ones in various colors and designs, and many also have a little extra storage space. But if you’re trying to save a little money, you can buy a regular car seat cover—like a pillowcase or a beach towel. Stroller covers can be used in the same way, or you can use a car seat cover for the stroller to double your protection. You’re sure to be thankful when your stroller isn’t covered in Cheerios or dirt.

A diaper bag

Diaper bags come in all shapes and sizes and are a necessity for all new mothers. They’re convenient and easy, plus they can also hold everything you need for your baby, from diapers to snacks to toys. But don’t worry—there are lots of cute diaper bags out there, so you can find one that fits your style. Just make sure it can hold everything you need:

  • Diapers and wipes,
  • change of clothes,
  • a couple of toys and books,
  • bottle or two,
  • burp cloth,
  • change of shoes,
  • small first aid kit,
  • change of sheets,
  •  blanket, etc.

You can even use a backpack if you want to be hands-free or if your other hand is holding a baby.

A wireless baby monitor

A baby monitor is a great way to keep an eye on your baby while they sleep or to keep an ear out for them while you’re in another room. This is a great item to put on your registry. Some monitors even have a two-way talk so that you can talk to your baby. Some monitors even have cameras, so you can watch your baby sleep. These are great for moms who are on bed rest or who are having a cesarean section. Some models even have a light on them so you can use them as a nightlight.

Wrapping up: Prescription and ointment swabs

You’ll probably need these two things while breastfeeding, but they’re things that you might forget to put on your registry. Prescription ointments can be hard to apply, especially when your hands are full. Swabs are a great way to apply ointments without getting your hands dirty. They’re cheap, too—you can buy them in bulk for less than a dollar a pack. You can also use them for other things, like applying medicine to pimples and rashes. An ointment is super greasy, and it can be hard to get it off once it’s over your hands. Swabs are a great way to solve this problem.
